Tell Yourself the Truth!

“Keep falsehood and lies far from me.” – Proverbs 20:8

You should just give up. You’ll never make it. You’re fat. You’re lazy. You’re hopeless.

Lies. All of them. Yet, most of us replay destructive thoughts like these over and over again in our minds until we actually believe them.

What you’re telling yourself is one of two things: it’s either a truth or a lie. So, how do you know if what you’re saying is true?

Truth is found in the Lord and in His Word (John 14:6; John 17:17). A lie, on the other hand, deviates or perverts what is right. Negative and distorted statements about yourself do not come from God. John 8:44 gives us some insight into where such lies originate. Listen to how Jesus describes Satan:

“He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” – John 8:44

Our defense against the enemy is God’s truth. If you read the Bible daily and meditate on God’s promises, you’ll be able to recognize when Satan whispers something in your ear that is false. You’ll know when you are being spoon fed lies. At that moment, the Holy Spirit will bring to mind verses to counteract Satan’s deception. Once you put this into practice, you’ll eventually change the way you think, resulting in greater joy, peace, and victory in your life.

Following are the five steps you need to take:

1. Read the Word.

2. Recognize the lies of the enemy.

3. Replace lies with truth.

4. Renew your mind.

5. Rest in God’s promises.

Let me give you a personal example of what this process looks like. If our daughters say, “I can’t!” when they are trying to do something, we immediately remind them of Philippians 4:13, which says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” My husband and I are trying to teach them how to take Satan’s lies captive and make them obedient to Christ.

God wants you to believe His Word so you can experience the amazing, abundant life He has for you. Stop believing the enemy’s lies, and start telling yourself the truth!
