An Audience with the King

“The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save.” – Zephaniah 3:17

An edict was signed by King Xerxes that required the extermination of all Jewish people in the land. The king put the law into effect not knowing his wife’s true heritage would include her in the annihilation. When Queen Esther learned of the decree, she knew she had to act. Esther called for a three-day fast among the Jews. She needed God’s help and favor, for if anyone, even the queen, requested an audience with the king without being summoned by him, he or she could immediately be put to death.

The Bible tells us what happened in Esther 5:1-3: “On the third day Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king’s hall. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the hall, facing the entrance. When he saw Queen Esther standing in the court, he was pleased with her and held out to her the gold scepter that was in his hand. So Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter. Then the king asked, “What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be given you.”

What a beautiful picture of our relationship with the Lord! When God sees us standing before Him, clothed in Christ Jesus with the garments of salvation, He is pleased. He extends his golden scepter of mercy and love toward us, inviting us to come near.

We would be wise to follow the example of Esther. Before she approached the king, she sought the King of kings through prayer and fasting. Because she did, her life was spared. Not only that, but the lives of hundreds of Jewish people were saved as well.

During your Daniel Fast, boldly approach the throne of grace. Bring your requests before the King. Intercede for the people you love and entrust them to the One who is mighty to save.
