Be Thankful

I’m up way before dawn on Thanksgiving morning, not because I’m busy in the kitchen, but because of low back pain. I tossed and turned most of the night, trying to get comfortable. Finally, at 4:00am, I decided to get out of bed since I wasn’t sleeping anyway.

Although frustrated and hurting, I keep thinking about the song my daughter, Jocelyn, sings at church. It’s called, “Be Thankful”:

Be thankful for the things you do
No matter big or small
Be thankful
For the Lord wants you to
Be thankful in it all.

I’m certainly not thrilled that my back hurts. However, the simple chorus of that song reminds me of how I should respond, no matter what my circumstances or pain level might be.

I am indeed blessed. The Lord has done so much in my life just in the past year. I’m always in awe at His goodness to me, despite my shortcomings and failures. His love never changes, and He is faithful even when I’m not. Even if I had nothing else, God has given me salvation, a gift for which I could never say, “Thank you,” enough.

Maybe you’re struggling with a physical affliction this morning like I am. Or perhaps it’s something else that’s making you feel discouraged. Whatever you’re facing, stop for just a minute and think about all the blessings God has given you. Don’t just think about them, either. Thank the Lord for all that He has done for you. Soon your perspective will change, and you’ll be ready to celebrate this day and every day with a heart full of joy.

Happy Thanksgiving!
