Dancing in the Rain

“Rejoice in the LORD your God, for he has given you the autumn rains in righteousness. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains.” – Joel 2:23

Yesterday afternoon when we were outside, it started to rain. As soon as my daughters felt the raindrops on their faces, they darted inside the house, not to get out of the rain but to get back in it. Grabbing their green raincoats and matching umbrellas, they ran out the front door, giggling and laughing over this unexpected treat.

The girls weren’t worried at all about their hair getting messed up or their clothes being soaked. The possibility of a lightning strike didn’t even enter their minds. They were just savoring the moment of being able to play in the rain.

As I watched the girls, I was reminded of how the Lord wants us to respond to difficult circumstances in our lives. When dark, threatening clouds loom over us, we don’t need to be paralyzed with fear. We don’t have to worry about the gale-force winds that threaten to knock us off our feet or the golf ball-sized hail that is pouring down. All we need to do is trust in our strong Shelter, and He will give us the strength to withstand whatever comes our way.

The rain showers will come. And, when they do, remember to embrace them for what they are – times of refreshment from the Lord and opportunities to grow stronger in your faith. Don’t be afraid. Put your hope in the Lord and in His Word. Allow Him to cover you with his joy and peace so that you, too, can dance in the rain.
