Day 2 – Drink up!

Well, how did Day 1 go for you? Easier than you thought? Or, much harder than you expected? Honestly, my first day was full of challenges. The day started off great. The message yesterday in church was AMAZING. Guess what the subject was? You got it – fasting (The Power & Purpose of Fasting, James River Assembly). Right after service, I headed upstairs to teach in ZooperChurch, which is our preschool children’s program, excited to share the love of Jesus with them. My enthusisam soon waned, though. The kids were outta control! I don’t know why it rattled me so much, but I felt physically and spiritual exhausted after that.

The rest of the day was sprinkled with little trials. Before going to bed, I opened up my Bible and prayed. I went to bed with God’s peace, ready for a fresh start and a new day.

This morning I had planned on a completely different subject for today’s devotional, but the Lord gave me something else to share with you. I hope that it encourages you as it did me. Even though I don’t know all of you by name, I am praying that the Lord will strengthen you on your fast. Your obedience and sacrifice is pleasing to Him, and He has a promise for those who pursue intimacy with Him:

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6

As soon I got out of bed and my feet hit the floor this morning, I headed straight for the kitchen to get a drink of water. I woke up feeling parched, and satisfying my thirst was all I could think about. I didn’t just sip the water either. I gulped it down as quickly as I could, and I felt so much better after I did.

Water is vital to life, and our bodies must have adequate amounts of it to thrive. All you have to do is type in “benefits of water” on any search engine, and you’ll find lists of reasons why it’s important to drink the water that your body needs. One way that water will help you as you fast is by removing toxins. Toxins are poisonous substances that cause damage to the body, resulting in all kinds of illness and health problems. While on the Daniel Fast, be sure to drink water throughout the day. Gradually work up to the point where you are taking in about half your body weight in ounces.

My experience this morning reminded me that our spirits also need hydration – refreshing streams of living water that only Jesus can bring to our thirsty lives. John 4:14 says, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” Only the Lord can satisfy those deep longings in our souls. Only He can flush out the toxins of anger, bitterness, jealousy, unforgiveness, and rebellion. Only Jesus our Savior can cleanse us from the inside out and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Whenever you bring a glass of water to your mouth during your fast, meditate on the fact that the Lord is your Living Water. He is ready and waiting to pour blessing, peace, power, victory and wisdom into your life with unlimited stores of water to give you. Drink deeply of the Lord today. Find delight in the truth of His Word. Thirst for Him alone, so that you may be “like a tree, firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither and in whatever he does, he prospers (Psalm 1:2-3).”
