Day 20 – Above Not Below

As I tucked my daughter into bed the other night, I noticed that her Bible was lying on top of her comforter near her feet. When I asked her why she put it there, she said she needed to keep it close so she could read it as soon as she woke up in the morning.

I want to be like my daughter, so excited about being with the Lord so that my first waking thoughts are on Him. Many times, though, my mind is swarming with all the things that need to get done that day. Instead of resting in the Lord and finding joy in Him, I get stressed.

I allow myself to get overwhelmed before I even walk out the door. Even though I may read the Bible and pray, I’m unable to receive what God wants to show me because I’m distracted and not focused on Him.

On those mornings, though, when my eyes are on the Lord, I’m filled peace. I wake up thinking about the Lord’s goodness, and I can’t wait to sit at His feet. As I open the Word and read about God’s love for me, my heart is full. The worries and cares in my life are all forgotten as I spend time in the Lord’s Presence.

Each day I have a choice. I can set my mind on things above – on the Lord and His truth – or I can be so consumed by the ways of this world that I miss out on God’s purpose for my life.

This morning I turn my eyes away from worthless things and fix my gaze upon my Savior. I put my hope in God’s Word, which is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. I find great delight in the Lord’s commands, for His promises preserve my life. Oh, how I love His law, and today I will meditate on it all day long! (Psalm 119:35,37,50,72, 97).

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” – Colossians 3:2
