Day 9 – Fasting is not about us.

Fasting is not about what God can do for us. In fact, when we fast, it isn’t about us at all; it’s about the Lord and what He wants to accomplish. We are fasting unto Him.

In Zechariah 7, the Lord spoke to the Israelites through the prophet Isaiah, “Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted?’” (Zechariah 7:5). This poignant story forces us to examine our inward motivation for beginning a fast in the first place.

Are we rushing in and out of prayer, or are we pausing to worship the Lord and wait upon Him? Are we truly seeking the Lord’s will during this fast, or are we secretly hoping to persuade God through fervent prayer to put our desires and plans into motion?

Fasting unto the Lord means that we devote these 21 days to our Savior, completely focused on Him. It means that each day we’re intentional about being with our best friend and take every opportunity to read His Word and pray. We constantly spend time praising the Lord for who He is. Our hearts are so full of thanksgiving that we can’t help but share His goodness and love with others.

When we get to the point we’re passionate for God’s ways and what breaks His heart – lost and hurting people – then we will begin to understand the real purpose of fasting.

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.” – Isaiah 58:6-8
