Devotion: More Than a Number

We often identify ourselves by numbers: $75K annual salary, two children, 2,500 sq.ft. house, 3-car garage, 165 pounds…you get the idea. God likes numbers, too: 10 Commandments, 12 disciples, feeding 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two small fish.

Numbers are significant – it’s true. But, are we? In other words, with all the billions of people in the world, do our lives really matter to God? Or, is He watching from a distance, uninvolved and uninterested? Most people struggle at some point with this very issue, wondering, “Does God really love me?”

The Lord answers with a resounding, “Yes!” He knew that we would have moments of uncertainty, so He gave us verses such as 1 John 3:1 to reassure us of His affections:

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

You are more than just a number to God. He doesn’t look down and see Human #54354. He sees you. Luke 12:7 says, “the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” He knows you.

So the next time you feel insignificant, forgotten, or rejected, read God’s love letter to you. Meditate on the undeniable fact that you are precious to God. He loves you so much more than you could ever imagine.

  1. I like this. You have a way of introducing interesting and encouraging thoughts in a really relate-able way. I like to read Jesus’ prayers for disciples, and all believers, in John, when I’m looking for encouragement.

  2. Thanks, Ashley…
