Don’t fight alone.

“He answered their prayers, because they trusted in Him.” – 1 Chronicles 5:20b

In January, I committed to read the Bible completely through this year. This past week I started in 1 Chronicles, which begins by listing the geneological accounts of the nation of Israel. Not the most interesting reading, to say the least. As I trudged through verse after verse of  “So and so, son of….,” I found an unexpected treasure.

Chapter 5 lists the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh. Verse 18 says that the men in this family were skilled soldiers, “able-bodied men who could handle shield and sword, who could use a bow, and who were trained for battle.” Even though these men were quite capable of defeating their enemies in their own strength, they didn’t even think about going into battle alone.

“They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab. They were helped in fighting them, and God handed the Hagrites and all their allies over to them, because they cried out to Him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in Him.”

You and I are also at war with a very real enemy who wants to destroy us. We are deceived if we think we can defeat him on our own. Our only hope for victory is to rely on the Lord’s strength. When we cry out to God, He will give us the help we need in the midst of the battle. All we have to do is put our trust in Him, and He will do the rest.
