Even Snorkels

“He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7b

We went swimming last week, and my daughters befriended a little girl who had a snorkel. The threesome spent all afternoon playing together and had a great time. As soon as we got in the car to go home, you can guess what they asked for. That’s right. Snorkels.

Instead of driving to the nearest Walmart to accommodate their request, I proposed a plan in which they could make enough money to purchase the snorkels. We compiled a list of tasks – make the bed, set the table, clean up toys, put clothes in the hamper – and agreed they would receive 25 cents for each chore accomplished.

The first day they were more than eager to help, practically begging me for work. I thought, “This is great! I wish I’d have thought of this idea sooner!” After about three days, though, their enthusiasm waned. They weren’t as ready to jump in and do their chores. “Oh, well,” I reasoned. “It was certainly good while it lasted.”

A day or so later while running errands, I decided to stop at some garage sales, which the girls and I enjoy doing together. We stopped at a few houses but didn’t find anything. Then, as we were heading home, I felt compelled to stop by one more sale. I can’t really explain it, but I just knew I should take a look.

As we walked up the driveway, I spotted a box full of sports equipment. I rummaged through the box, and there underneath the soccer balls, basketballs, and jumpropes, I spotted them. Masks and snorkels in brand-new condition. They were only 50 cents each, which meant that the girls had earned more than enough money to purchase them. I couldn’t wait to show them what I’d found.

You can imagine how thrilled they were. I explained how God had led us to that garage sale and that it was no accident that the snorkels were there. I wanted them to understand that He had provided the snorkels just for them! The girls may not have grasped the whole spiritual significance of that experience, but they know this to be true: God cares about what we care about. Even snorkels.
