Fishing 101

“Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.” – Psalm 81:10b

I never thought I’d see the day when my husband would take up fishing as a hobby. However, in the last few months he has been transformed into a full-fledged angler. Fishing has nearly become an obsession for him. He reads magazine articles, watches instructional videos, and even practices his casting on our front lawn. He’s definitely hooked.

The other night, Justin took me fishing. As I stood on the bank of the river, strategically moving my worm through the water trying to catch the “big one,” I thought about the similarities between fishing and our spiritual lives.

Our enemy, Satan, is an experienced fisherman whose goal is to catch us and eat us for lunch. He is a master at what he does and knows our weaknesses well. He ever so carefully places temptations in our lives with a tacklebox full of ways to deceive us.

When a fish is hungry, it will nibble at just about anything it sees that resembles food. However, when that fish is full, it will swim right on past even the most appetizing meal. The same is true for us. If we are feeding on God’s Word, we won’t fall for Satan’s tricks. However, if our hearts are not set on following the Lord, we will be enticed to indulge in things that will hurt us.

The best way to avoid being ensnared by the enemy is to know what the Bible says. That way when you encounter a colorful, shiny, high-priced lure that Satan is dangling in front of your eyes, you will have the wisdom and self-control to resist it. The bait won’t appeal to you because your appetite has already been satisfied in the Lord. You’ll just keep on swimming right past the temptation and into victory.
