Get up, and pray.

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” – Colossians 4:2

It’s 2:12 am, but something really incredible just happened, and I just had to write about it.

Many times when I wake up in the middle of the night, I know it’s because God wants me to get up and pray. Sometimes I say a short prayer while I’m lying there and fall right back to sleep. Other times, though, sleep eludes me, so I throw off my warm covers and head into the living room to spend time with the Lord.

Tonight I had only been asleep about three hours when my eyes were open, and I was wide awake. I had a strong sense that God wanted me to pray about something in particular – my husband’s hedge fund account. Like many other people, we experienced some major hits in our account last year due to the downturn in the economy. The worst part about it was that not only did we lose money, but also those who have invested in it with us suffered losses as well. After a few minutes of trying to decide whether or not my sudden wakefulness was really God’s prompting or just a mild case of insomnia, I forced my weary body out of bed and began to pray.

At first, I felt as if my words weren’t going beyond the four walls of our home. Of course, I knew the Lord was listening, but I wasn’t sure how effective my intercession really was. After all, my words were pretty sluggish since I was half asleep. But, after a few minutes, the intensity of my prayers changed. I was energized and began to ask the Lord to bless Justin with wisdom and insight and to help him recognize opportunities for profitable trades. I even prayed that God would give him one of those trades tonight. Then, I praised the Lord for His provision and for helping us financially.

Before we went to bed last night, Justin set a computer alarm on the account, which alerts him of a move in the currency market that could result in a money-making trade. That way, if the alarm goes off, he can get up and execute the trade immediately instead of missing an opportunity. I had only been praying and praising for a few minutes when that alarm went off!

I got up and went into the bedroom to share with Justin what God had done. We were both very encouraged and thankful. We won’t know until tomorrow just how profitable the trade was, but it really doesn’t matter to me. Tonight’s experience wasn’t about the money at all. It was a poweful reminder that God answers all kinds of prayer, and He wants us to trust Him with every detail of our lives, big or small.

As you seek the Lord during your Daniel Fast, and even when you’re not fasting, be aware of times when God is calling you to prayer. He might bring someone to your mind as you’re sitting at your desk at work or at home on your sofa. Perhaps He will speak softly to your heart as you’re driving down the road in your car. Or, maybe, just maybe, He will wake you up in the middle of the night to get on your knees and pray.
