God is a Promise Keeper

“You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.” – Joshua 23:14, NLT

All Sarah wanted was to have a son. To be childless in her culture was considered to be a curse and a disgrace. Sarah prayed and prayed, asking the Lord to give her this deep desire of her heart. Years went by. No baby. More time passed. Still no child. Sarah grew impatient and decided to take matters into her own hands. She gave her maidservant, Hagar, to her husband, Abraham, so she could have offspring through her. A child was born; however, the situation produced a whole new set of problems and certainly wasn’t what God had planned for them.

When Abraham was 99 years old, God appeared to him and said he and Sarah would indeed have a child. Upon receiving this incredible news, Genesis 17:17 says Abraham “bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. “How could I become a father at the age of one hundred?” he wondered. “Besides, Sarah is ninety; how could she have a baby?” Yet, everything happened just as God said it would. A year after God made the promise to Abraham, Sarah gave birth to a son, Isaac.

Sometimes it may seem that God’s promises are not being fulfilled. We read the Word, put our hope in the Lord, and pray for His will to be accomplished. When things don’t happen like we think they should or according to our timetable, we get frustrated, just like Sarah. Isaac wasn’t born late. He came into the world at just the right time, according to God’s perfect plan. Had Sarah waited patiently, continuing to trust in the Lord instead of rushing head of Him, she could have saved herself unnecessary heartache and pain.

The God of Abraham and Sarah is the same God we serve today. He kept His word to them, and He will keep His word to us. When God says He will do something, He will do it. His promises are true, true, true. Not one has ever failed. Not one ever will!
