It’s All About Love

“Let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” – 1 John 4:7-9

At this time of the year, I normally teach a class at my church called First Place 4 Health. It’s a wonderful Christ-centered wellness program that helps people achieve balance in all areas of their lives – spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally. One of the components of the class involves a 10-week Bible study. This summer, though, since I decided to take a break from teaching, I have found myself without a systematic way of studying the Word, and I’ve missed it.

The other day I asked God to lead me to a study for the summer. I looked online and found a book that sounded interesting, so I went to our local bookstore to pick it up. Once I opened the book, I discovered it wasn’t a Bible study, so I decided not to buy it. Although I was a little disappointed, I wandered over to the “Bible Studies” section to see what I could find. I silently prayed, “Lord, which one do You want me to get?” My eyes fell to the title “He Is My All: Living in the Truth of God’s Love for Me” by Debbie Alsdorf. I knew immediately that was the book I needed.

God’s love is everything. Everything we do must be rooted in His affection for us. When we fully receive His love, then we’re free to love those around us with pure, unselfish motives. On the other hand, if we don’t rely on the love God has for us, then what we say and do is for nothing (1 John 4:15-16, 1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

Do you know how much God loves you? If you have a hard time accepting that truth, spend time reading verses in the Bible that speak of His great love (see list below). As you do, you will see that Lord adores you and accepts you just as you are. You will be confident in who you are in Christ, which will enable you to live and love through Him.

• “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

• “Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” – Ephesians 2:4-5

• “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” – Ephesians 3:17-19
