Made In His Image

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” – Psalm 139:14

My daughters learned a song at Vacation Bible School this summer that I can’t seem to get out of my head. But, that’s a good thing. God is using the simple words and catchy tune to instill a powerful truth deep within me.

The song is, “Who He Says I Am,” and the verses describe how are created in God’s image. It also echoes the truth of Psalm 139:14 that we are remarkably and wonderfully made. I can’t help but smile when I sing it because it reminds me just how special I am to the Lord.

My greatest desire is to be like Jesus and to live a life that’s pleasing to Him. I seek to honor the Lord by being a loving wife, godly mother, and faithful friend. However, none of those things define me. None of those things define you, either. Your value as a person is not by determined by anything you do or have done. Nor is it based upon what you look like, what kind of house you live in, or where you work.

Your identity is found in Christ alone. He is the One who gives your life value. God loved you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the ultimate price for your sin – death – so that you could have a relationship with Him and receive the inheritance He has waiting for you.

When we believe that God passionately loves us, we won’t stay the same. Our faces will radiate joy instead of irritation or anger. Our hearts will be sensitive to others instead of being hardened and self-absorbed with our own needs. Our hands will be open to serve rather than closed and tight-fisted, refusing to be bothered.

Each of us is a unique, one-of-a-kind creation, fashioned by the very hand of God. We are indeed the Lord’s image bearers, but we cannot effectively reflect His glory until we first know who we are in Christ and how precious we are to Him.
