Preparation is the pathway to success.

We’re less than a week away from the beginning of the 21-day Daniel Fast. I don’t know about you, but after all the holiday meals, parties, and desserts, I am more than ready to begin!

Don’t wait until Day 1 to start thinking about the fast. Take time this week to prepare mentally, physically, and spiritually. If you do, your fast will be much more effective. Here are a few ways to get your heart and mind set on the 21-day journey that’s just ahead of you:

  • Mentally – Make a list of meals that you want to cook. Browse through the recipes on this blog to get ideas, and write down a tentative food plan for each week of the fast. However, if the thought of meal planning for three weeks stresses you out, focus on only one week at a time. Transfer your meal plan to a calendar, and post it on your refrigerator.
  • Physically – Drink plenty of water. Start cutting back on the caffeine and sweets.
  • Spiritually – Pray. Ask the Lord to quiet your heart so that you can hear from Him. Spend time reading the Bible, and let God’s Word encourage and strengthen you.

Let me add one more very important thing: Recognize the enemy’s attempts to defeat you. When you feel doubt and fear regarding this fast, open up the Word and feast on God’s promises. Refuse to entertain negative self-talk such as “You can’t do it.You’ll never make it. You can’t go three weeks without _________. You might as well not even try because you will fail.” Remember, the Lord your God is with you, and He is mighty to save (Zephaniah 3:17). If He is calling you to this time of prayer and fasting, He will help you and give you the strength you need.

I’m praying for those of you who hunger for the Lord and who desire to know Him in a greater way. May God bless you richly as you honor Him through the Daniel Fast.
