We are rich.

“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” – 1 Timothy 6:17

Earlier this week, my daughter asked, “Momma, are we rich?” I opened my mouth to reply in the negative when my thoughts drifted to the three Mission of Mercy children in Haiti that we sponsor and the extreme poverty in which they live. I replied, “Yes, baby, we are. Our family has more than most people in the whole world. We are very rich because we know Jesus.”

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Ephesians 2:4, which says, “Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. “ Not only has God rescued me from slavery to sin, He has also blessed me with every spiritual blessing in Christ. My life has been redeemed, and I am forgiven. Talk about being rich!

Although there is nothing wrong with having nice worldly possessions, God makes it clear in His Word that we shouldn’t set our hearts on acquiring wealth. 1 Timothy 6:9 says, “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.” When we look to things to bring satisfaction and joy to our lives, we will come up empty-handed every time.

Have you received the abundant riches of God’s glorious grace? Or are you still chasing after wealth to bring fulfillment to your life? Even if you have nothing else, nothing but the Lord’s love for you, it is more than enough. He is truly all that you need.
