“The wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days. When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.” – Nehemiah 6:15-16
When Nehemiah learned that the wall of Jerusalem had been destroyed, he was devastated. The city wall represented strength, protection, and safety. Without it, God’s people were vulnerable, subject to invasion from their enemies.
Upon hearing the news, Nehemiah fasted and prayed. After that time with the Lord, he asked the king for a leave of absence from his duties as cupbearer to return to Jerusalem. The king not only granted Nehemiah’s request but also provided officers and cavalry to accompany him. Once Nehemiah arrived at his destination and surveyed the damage, he announced to the people what God had put in his heart to do.
The Israelites caught Nehemiah’s vision for restoration and worked together to rebuild the wall. They kept going despite repeated attempts to frustrate their efforts. They believed in what God was doing and did their part to make it happen. As a result, the project was completed in a miraculous 52 days! The Bible says that when the Israelites’ enemies heard the news, they were afraid because they realized the work had been done with the help of God (Nehemiah 6:15-16).
Just as God had a specific plan for Nehemiah, He has a plan for you. Don’t be discouraged if others around you don’t understand what God has put in your heart. Pray as Nehemiah did, with full confidence that the Lord will bring about what He has planned. Begin building your wall, and watch for God to work a miracle in your life.
