Strawberry-Banana Smoothie #1
4 ounces extra-firm tofu
1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk or soy milk
1/4 cup unsweetened apple juice
2 tablespoons Date Honey
1 cup sliced strawberries
1 frozen banana, peeled, sliced (about 1 cup)
Place all ingredients in a blender, and process until smooth.
Yield: 2 servings (serving size: about 1 cup or 8 ounces)
Recipe Notes
- To prepare banana ahead of time, remove peel and place in a plastic ziptop bag until frozen.
- Instead of using Date Honey, soak 3-4 Medjool dates in warm water at room temperature for an hour before adding to blender.

Hi Kristen. I love your website. My version of a strawberry banana smoothie is very simple and tasted great. In a blender I put 1/2 banana and 4-5 strawberries. Added few cubes of ice and about 2 tbs of water. Very tasty. Think about next time freezing it to see how this would taste.
Hi, Michelle! Thanks for your kind words about the website. I think your smoothie sounds yummy!
Thank you for sharing your recipes. I am new with Daniel fast, and you have been a blessing. I had back surgery, and I am in pain every day. Am praying for a breakthrough. It has been over a year. Is honey allowed. Also are the other oatmeals allowed besides steelcut oatmeal?
Hi, Joyce! I’m glad you’re enjoying the recipes. No, honey is not allowed. No added sugar in any form is a part of the Daniel Fast. You can have regular oats for oatmeal as well. They don’t have to be steel-cut. Thanks for your comments and questions!
No, the banana doesn’t have to be frozen. The smoothie just won’t be quite as chilled. It doesn’t really affect the texture at all (or the taste!). Thanks for your question!
hi Kristen, I was just wondering if the banans HAVE to be frozen, because I wannna make the smoothie right now, but im worried it will affect it. thanks a lot!
Whey protein isn’t allowed. No animal products are a part of the Daniel Fast. But you can use plant protein powder. Just read the label carefully to make sure it doesn’t contain added sugar or any other restricted ingredients.
Kristen, just wondering if you can use smooth tofu for the extra firm in this smoothie?
Yes, you can!
Thanks! I tried it this morning for breakfast and it was really good!
Hi Kristen may God bless everything you do. Your book has been a tremendous help as I do the Daniel Fast. One thing…can the smoothie be made without the dates or date honey?
Thank you, Sheree! Yes, you can definitely omit the dates or Date Honey. The dates just add an extra bit of sweetness but certainly not necessary!
Thank you I’m looking forward to trying this.
What is Tofu made out of? And why is it healthy for you?
Tofu is bean curd made from mashed soybeans. It’s shaped into soft, white blocks. Tofu is considered to be excellent source of protein for vegetarians (more than 10 grams per half-cup serving). It’s also a great source of calcium and iron.
I am not a physician or a registered dietician, so what I am about to share is based upon my own experience and research.
I would be more concerned if you were pregnant or if your baby was younger and not taking in any solids. However, since she is eating other foods in addition to the nursing, I think you will be ok to do the Daniel Fast 100%. It certainly won’t be dangerous for either of you. Also, you will get plenty of protein through the foods on the fast. People don’t realize just how much they get through vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains. When I’ve analyzed my diet on a Daniel Fast, I’m taking in anywhere from 12-15% protein.
You could do a modified Daniel Fast by having some chicken or fish, but nutritionally I don’t think you have anything to worry about. You should be fine, even if nursing. But, again, if you are concerned, you could always ask a professional. 🙂
I would like to participate in a Daniel fast and I am nursing my infant. Are there any modifications I should make?
In response to the question, “Do I have to add the tofu?” No, you don’t. The tofu adds protein and thickens the smoothie. You can also make it thicker by adding crushed ice or more frozen banana.
Pure, 100% apple juice IS allowed on the fast, as long as there is no added sugar or sweetener.
Thanks for your questions and comments!
Thanks so much for this recipe! I am wondering about 2 things…do I have to add the tofu? I’ve never had it, and frankly, am weary of trying it! Do you add it just for protein or does it add a firmness to the smoothie? Also, is apple juice allowed during the daniel fast? My thought on apple juice was that it was mainly sugar? Thanks so much!
Bri, let me just add one more thing about protein supplements. Technically, they would not be allowed on the Daniel Fast because some of the ingredients would fall under the “Foods to Avoid.” However, you always have the freedom to modify the fast slightly to include more protein if you are concerned about not getting enough iron, especially if you have a medical condition.
Great question, Bri. Many people tend to be concerned about not getting enough protein, since meat and dairy are not allowed on the Daniel Fast. However, you are taking in more protein than you realize through beans/legumes, nuts, seeds, and even fruits/vegetables. One way to boost your protein in meals is to combine foods such as beans and rice. A great high protein snack is a trail mix made up of nuts, seeds, and dried fruit.
Following is a list of protein-rich foods:
Lentils
Beans
Chickpeas
Black eye peas
Soy milk
Tofu
Quinoa (grain)
Cooked peas
Nuts/nut butters
Seeds (pumpkin, sunflower)
Foods that are high in iron:
Fruit: Dried (dates, figs, prunes, raisins)
Vegetables: Asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage, kale, parsley, potatoes, spinach.
Beans/legumes: Lentils, black eye peas, black beans, chickpeas
Other: Tofu
If you are still concerned about your iron levels with the fast, a protein supplement is an option. However, you should try to get the highest quality supplement you can because many brands out there are filled with chemicals and fillers and usually have sugar.
I hope this information helps. Email me if you have more questions. Thanks for writing!
What is your suggestion for adding protein to the fast? I already have low iron. Can I take protein supplements?
