Two-Bean Burger

If you've been craving a burger, take a look this recipe. It's a burger, all right, but one that's completely Daniel Fast friendly. Yummy!

Course Main Course
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped onion
  • 1 cup canned black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup canned great northern beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Mash beans in a large bowl,  leaving about 1/4 of the beans whole. and set aside. Heat olive oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, and cook until soft and translucent. Place in a bowl with beans, and add flaxseed meal, garlic powder, cumin, and salt.
  • Return skillet to medium heat, and add a teaspoon of olive oil, if needed, to prevent burgers from sticking. Scoop about 1/3 cup of bean mixture for each burger. Flatten with a spatula. Cook 5 minutes, or until bottoms are browned and slightly crispy. Flip, and cook another 5 minutes.
  • Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 burger)

Notes

  • For more texture, stir in 1/4 cup brown rice.
  • Spread burger with Guacamole with a Little Kick or Super Easy Guacamole.
Top with tomato slices, lettuce, and/or onions.
Try with Taco Seasoning instead of using cumin, garlic powder, and salt.

Hi there.

Is there a substitute or alternative to great northern beans? We don’t have them here in S.A?

Yes! You can use navy beans. Can you get them where you live?

Hi! Great question. Yes, certain Larabars are Daniel Fast friendly. Just stay away from the ones with chocolate chips! 🙂

This is absolutely delicious even if I couldn’t keep the burger together. It’s extremely filling and topped with tomatoes, avocado and banana pepper rings … a pure feast. In your picture, what is under the tomatoes? It looks like cheese, but dairy isn’t allowed on the fast, right?

Yes, that’s correct. No dairy is allowed on the fast. What you see in the photo that looks like cheese is Hummus. 🙂

is there a certain bread we can eat? Maybe one we can buy instead of making?

The only type of bread you can have on the Daniel Fast is flatbread (made without yeast). There are probably store-bought flatbreads that are acceptable, but I can’t recommend a certain brand. I usually just make my own Flatbread recipe).

I was thinking of using my left over uncooked black bean burger mix to make into meatballs and eating with the pesto spaghetti squash. Has anyone tried making meatballs this way? I figured just rolling them small and baking them in the oven? And possibly even throwing some tomato sauce or something on them?

Sarah, I think that’s a great idea! I’ve done the same thing with other recipes. You should definitely give it a try with this one!

Hi! Yes, it’s Hummus. I also have two other hummus recipes, Confetti Hummus and Pumpkin Hummus.

What other types of snacks can we eat? Can we eat peanut butter and natural fruit preserves? Are we still able to purchase baked Tostitos scoops and trisuits crackers. Also, what type of bread is allowed?

Hi, Sheila! First, make sure you look over my Snacks page. You’ll find many recipes there! If you’re referring to store-bought products, there are a few that are Daniel Fast friendly.
– Some Larabars are acceptable (read labels carefully to get the ones without chocolate chips or any other restricted ingredients).
– Baked Tostitos are an option. Any chips or crackers must say “baked” on the label or they’re fried. Fried foods (including corn or tortilla chips) aren’t allowed.
– Air-popped or oil popped corn is acceptable.
– Nut butters are allowed. Just make sure they don’t have added sugar.
– Fruit preserves must be 100% fruit (no added sugar).

The idea of the Daniel Fast is to eat as healthy as possible, so it’s best to limit your store-bought snacks. 🙂

Delish! Can’t even imagine having another beef burger. I imagine I will when dining out if bean burgers aren’t available. But in the future, my burgers at home will be made with beans. Thanks for all you do to help us get and stay healthy!

I wasn’t too sure how these would turn out, but my wife and I put a mango cucumber black bean salsa with them and they were amazing. Very filling of a hamburger craving. And easy to make.

These are amazing!! So much better than the frozen stuff I used to buy! I was wondering if these could be made ahead and the freeze them for late, and if so what’s the best way to do that?

Yes, you can freeze them. I recommend cooking the burgers first, letting them cool, and then putting them in the freezer. That way, all you need to do is heat them up when you’re ready to have them for dinner.

Is there a way to correct the errors on the recipe and clarify what do you do with the1/4 of the whole beans that you set aside. Also, it it 1/3 or 1/4 cup of mixture for each burger? Not that it matters because I’m sure you can make them the size you want but it does help when following a recipe when it reads nicely. Thank you and God bless you for this wonderful information.

Thanks for your comment! I didn’t realize there was a slight typo in the instructions. I’ve corrected it! As far as mashing the beans, you keep all the beans in one bowl. Just don’t mash them completely like mashed potatoes! You want some of the beans to stay whole. I hope this helps and that you enjoy the recipe!

Thank you so much for your obedience Kristen. I love getting up in the morning and reading your devotions in the book. Your receipes are helping so much to continue on this 21 day fast. My husband is doing it also and i was afraid he would quit since he’s such a meat, rice and bean kind of man. I made these and he was so happy he swore i had given him a burger. haha. Fasting and praying for a breakthrough for our family especially our Daughter if you can also pray for her. God Bless You and your family and thank you very grateful to you.

I appreciate your encouragement, and I’m glad you’re being blessed by the devotions. And, that makes me happy that your husband enjoyed the bean burger! Success! 🙂 Lord God, I lift up Sonya’s daughter to you. She needs you, God. You know right where she is and what is holding her back from trusting you completely. Open her eyes, Lord, to your unfailing love. Keep the Enemy far from her so she can see that you’re the answer to her deepest longings. Thank you for working in her life to bring her to you! In Jesus’ name, AMEN!

Delicious alternative to a traditional burger, it is much healthier too, no grease! Topped mine with jalapeños and my wife’s with sautéed onions. Thank you for the great recipe.

Can you substitute the flaxseed mill for yellow corn meal or whole wheat flour? If so does the amount need to change?

My church has started our annual Daniel fast,1-6-14 it will continue until 1-26-14, I would like to thank God for u so much because of this web site, ur advise and recipies are very helpful to me n my family, but my question is where can I get the flaxseed meal and can we use whole wheat couscous ???

You can buy flaxseed meal in the health food section of the grocery store or in a health food store. If the whole wheat couscous comes in a package, check the ingredients list to make sure there isn’t anything that’s not allowed. If it’s truly a whole grain, then it is fine! Thanks for your question!

You can find flaxseed next to the flour and wheat germ at Walmart.

What can we use for “cheese”

I have a couple of suggestions. I’ve used pieces of tofu for melted “cheese;” here’s an example: Antipasto Pizza Pie. A nut-based topping is also an option, such as with “Parmesan Cheese.”
